Fish oil given within 5 hours after stroke limits brain damage Nov 2010 - A new study has pointed out that fish oil contains a substance that may help to limit or prevent brain damage following a stroke, if given within 5 hours after the stroke. Dr Nicolas Bazan at the Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center said docosahexaenoic acid -- a component of fish oil -- is a powerful therapeutic agent that can protect brain tissue and promote stroke recovery, even when treatment is delayed by up to five hours. "Holy Basil is many splendored things," says Jim Duke, PhD, in opening The Garden Pharmacy column in this issue of Alternative & Complementary Therapies. He reports on holy basil (Ocimum tenuiflorum) or tulsi, as it is known in Hindi, and its adaptogenic activity, its stress-relieving effects, and its effects on aging, asthma, and diabetes. Duke reports that he found an immense range of indications and activities for holy basil derived from animal, chemical, epidemiologic, or in vitro evidence; and clinical proof, withapproval by the German Commission E or approval by TRAMIL. Two critical omega-3 essential fatty acids available from certain food or nutritional supplements but not manufactured by the body—Eicosapentenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic (DHA)—play a role in optimal brain functioning and have antidepressant benefits that have not been fully recognized.
